In 1811 leadership of Derby porcelain was passed to William Bloor. Bloor had a reputation as a shrewd businessman and was recognized as an art lover with an appreciation for works that were richly coloured and elegantly styled.

Under Bloor's leadership the Derby porcleain company began designing brightly coloured Japanese imari porcelain patterns and they produced one of the most popular and collected versions of Derby porcelain ever created.
